First Palestinian Gets HU

The Hebrew University yesterday awarded its first doctorate to a Palestinian. Yasser el
Nahhal, a Gaza Strip resident, received a doctorate for work in developing the use of red
soil compounds to prevent the infiltration of poisonous compounds into ground water
resources.
Nahhal's work will enable farmers to use chemical fertilizers more efficiently and
reduce soil and water pollution.
"As far as we know, no other Palestinian has received a doctorate from any Israeli
university," said Baruch Rubin, one of Nahhal's four advisers. He said seven West
Bank Palestinians are currently working on doctorates at the university.
Nahhal, a single father of three, was accepted to school in Britain but decided to
study closer to home in Israel. A European grants committee provided funding for his
studies. Nahhal, 40, spent six years working on his doctorate, a year longer than the
average.
"Israeli closures of the Gaza Strip kept me away from the university," he
said. "It would have taken longer if not for electronic mail."
As a deputy director of the Palestinian Authority's Environmental Protection and
Research Institute in Gaza, Nahhal will be able to advance the institute's work and
participate in joint regional research for environmental studies.
"I consider my work an achievement not only for the Palestinians but the whole
world." He has applied for patents in Israel, Europe and the United States but said
his work, written in Arabic and English, is a gift to the world. Sections of his work were
published in four articles in various international scientific publications. Nahhal
received his master's degree from Egypt's University of Alexandria. Honorary doctorates
Twelve honorary doctorates were also awarded yesterday. Recipients included Claude
Lanzmann, the director of the acclaimed Holocaust film "Shoah," and Israeli
sculptor Dani Karavan, who has an international reputation for his outdoor installations
